The extreme poverty of the family makes every possession and every happy experience stand out as something very special, often taking on almost magical proportions. One of the first chapter books I ever read, way back in the second grade in 1983, it has held a special place in my book loving heart ever since. Sadly the original copy that I owned was donated to Goodwill several years back but thanks to the magic of the internet I was able to purchase a new-to-me used copy to re-read and keep.
