This was a terrifying book for someone who babysat as much as I did. I seem to recall a similar book from the same era about a girl who got raped when she accepted a ride from a stranger. She made a joke that enraged the driver about his other car, presumably a sports car, being in the shop, and he misinterpreted this as her being mercenary, which was not her intention, but as I remember was a sort of trigger for his violence.

I borrowed this from Clare for two reasons: I love Richard Peck's Blossom Culp books (esp the first), and Clare had just identified this book as a y/a novel that had blown her mind because the protagonist gets raped and nothing ever happens to the rapist. We were both curious to find out/remember what the hell this book was. Anyway, it was good. And actually kind of scary. I'm glad someone wrote it.

I remember when everyone in junior high was reading this book, so I had to read it too--I expected something really horrible and taboo to happen. But it was pretty tame. This is probably because I was reading Stephen King in junior high...
