When I was about a third of the way through this dysfunctional family story, I almost put it down. It was hard to read, not because of the writing, but because I couldn't find anyone to like. Every member of our narrator's family was unpleasant, flaky or harsh, and the main character himself was sort of adrift and uncharismatic.
