An absolutely delightful Victorian farce in which a group of Victorian schoolgirls attempt to conceal the death of their awful schoolmistress and live in a sisterly utopia . . . and must therefore deal with the nosy neighbors, angry creditors, hopeful suitors, and suspected murderers who descend on them. Laugh-out-loud funny as well as tender, it made me wish my nickname was Smooth Kitty!

Less a detective story than ensemble production of no-so-proper Victorian young ladies. There is a mystery to solve, certainly, but it was more compelling to watch the seven girls figure out how to hide the death of their headmistress in order to gain some independence and autonomy. Delightfully, the characters still felt Victorian despite their scandalous behavior, not like modern characters stuck into a historical setting. I thought this would be a book I would love, but there were too many things that irritated me about it. Each girl has a nickname, and even though we get a description of each name in the beginning, they are still called by the nicknames throughout the entire book. It gets old quickly. I believe most middle grade readers would have a good memory to know that Alice is "Stout," Elinor is "Dour" and so on.
