Really fascinating worldbuilding, including a very clever magic system and a caste system that enraged me (as it was supposed to). I quickly grew to love Fie, and her useless Hawk boys. I hopped back and forth between the book and the audiobook, and I wasn't sure about the audiobook reader at first, but ended up really liking the voices she did.

I really wanted to like this book, and will definitely stick with the series but it's not quite up there among my favourites. I'm not sure why, the pacing is tight, the world-building exquisite and original and the political allegories are incisive and on point. My only quibble, which is perhaps a matter of personal taste, is the lack of humour. I am not really a huge fan of YA Fantasy, and it seems that there is a lot of it out there now a days. I am sure it has its place. Then again there are, in the genre, books that seem to rise above that label. This is one of the ones that rises above. The plot was one that thoroughly kept my interest and was extremely enjoyable.
