Biddy and Quincy are "Speddies" - Special Ed students, one with birth-related brain damage and the other injury-related. They aren't friends in high school, but are placed together in the home of Lizabeth, a woman in her 60s with failing health, where Biddy is assigned to cook and clean to earn their room and board, while Quincy is given a prep cook job at a grocery store (but immediately takes over the cooking job at Lizabeth's because she has been taught by a former foster father).
