I hate sports, and I loved this book. Paul has worn thick glasses ever since a mysterious accident that happened when he was five, but he's not blind, and he is seeing more clearly every day. He loves soccer, and is determined to play goalie at his new school in Tangerine, Florida. But his mom registers him as disabled, and he is disqualified to play. So he switches to the city school. Paul remains undaunted by everything he is faced with in weird Florida - muck fires, lightning striking everywh

GREAT story.
GREAT themes.
LOVELY writing.
GREAT pace.
Specifically, i loved how the ending of each chapter had some sort of mysterious two-liner.
I loved the journal-y, yet non-journal-y feel.
On a personal note, I felt a lot like Paul Fisher... I grew up as the stark minority in a caucasian town, and as I move on in life, I get along more with minorities...
A GREAT book for both young and old people.
Had me crying at the end.
Intriguing, believable characters.

This is a great sports story with a lot of "issues" interwoven. We read it for the Albion Book Club and had a great discussion!

Couldn't put it down. Gripping sports story/ mystery/coming of age tale. Great for people who like to root for the underdog and hate developers who turn farm land to gated sub-divisions (with disastrous effects). Weave in a dark family secret that protagonist Paul pieces together through flashbacks throughout the story and you have a suspenseful, read-in-one-sitting book.

Wonderful YA novel set in dystopic Florida. Something is seriously messed up in the main character's family - can he face the truth and break free? Funny and moving. I love the way the landscape is so vivid and reflects the characters so well - its a character itself.
