Combination of portal fantasy and original fairy tale, this is written in a more stylized fashion than her other books, and probably aimed at younger readers than Pippi or Ronja as well. Mio, an unloved orphan in our world, finds that in the land of Faraway he is the beloved, long-lost prince. He has a doting father, a beautiful and magical horse, lives in a palace, is surrounded by friends. This book is absolutely wonderous. I would argue that this particular translation is a little bit off, but hardly enough to make it any less than great. While it is technically a children's books, it can be read, appreciated and have tears shed for it by everyone. Mio, My Son is an archetypal story that still elaborates and that is glorious.

I think it's been close to 20 years since I read this last, so I only remembered the story in very broad strokes. It's written as a traditional fairytale, with all of the expected hallmarks. While aimed at children, it's a lot scarier than most of her other books, and I think that's probably why it's not as well known.
