SNOW DAY!!! WOO HOO! I woke up and started reading this as I ate my breakfast. I had coffee and coffee cake... again. Then I played with the kids some. Then I told them, back off... I was reading. Then we built a snow fort. Then I read. Dinner. Read. Put the kids to bed. Read. My wife said, "Philip... there's no way we're having another snow day tomorrow. You should really turn off the light."

Fantastic middle grade. Some people will complain that the ending felt predictable and canned, but I thought it worked really well given Willow's character. One of the better books I've read in 2013. Highly recommended. ...more

Incredible characters to root for, an uplifting read of finding family where you least expect.
Totally believable? No, but who cares....it is a lovely story to get lost in.

The characters in this book are lovingly developed and wonderfully detailed. Sloan does a great job of helping readers to understand why Willow acts the way she does, while at the same time making it evident how Willow's behavior looks to those who are not privy to her thoughts. Mai, Dell and Pattie are also incredibly well-developed characters, and it is immensely satisfying to watch these people grow in response to an extraordinary situation.
