I won an Advanced Readers’ edition paperback copy of this book at LibraryThing in exchange for an honest review. (Thank you to LibraryThing and to the publisher William Morrow!) I received it more promptly than I’d expected on 7/16. I read it from 7/19-7/23 early morning hours. Publication date is scheduled to be on 8/25. Definitely one of the best books I've read this year! Ms. Kline spoke at a local function about Orphan Train a couple of years ago and she was as engaging a speaker as she is a writer. Here is a part of history that we don't often hear about - the female prisoners who were sent to Australia (specifically Tasmania) in the mid 19th century. I thought The Exiles was terrific. It's a whole chapter of history I knew almost nothing about and it certainly isn't written about enough. Evangeline's story broke my heart but Hazel's revenge was fabulous. I listened to the audiobook as opposed to reading it so I had the advantage of the reader's accents and British pronunciation which is always cool. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Colonialism is evil. The existence of that horrid orphanage. Mathinna's tragic life. The death of prisoners on the trip there. Any novel with historical boat travel -- prepare for a lot of unjustified "accidental" deaths.
