This was a great deal of fun this time around. I was reminded of how, in the 21st century, I get to sit and enjoy my solitude in nature. But that simply wasn’t the construct of nature in Beowulf’s time. It was a dangerous force that invaded your (mead) halls, tearing down the ramparts humans erect to protect themselves from chaos. It needed to be exiled from human life, banished to the shadowy marshes and “dismal wood.”

Loved this. Can't believe how gripping and emotionally accessible this story is. I got a copy from the library and read it in nearly one sitting. Finished by reading aloud the last few pages. The introduction by Seamus Heaney is excellent.
