I thought that this was generally a good summary of some of the issues with the modern, car-oriented, North American built environment, and perhaps a good introduction for people new to the topic, though the fact that it's a decade out of date is a bit of an issue.

This is a really good introduction to many of the things the Urban Planning book club has been thinking about.
