This is a very important book. It clearly demonstrates how residential segregation of African-Americans in the US today is due to deliberate laws and actions of the government. (That is, segregation is de jure, not de facto.)

Though the subject matter makes the book absolutely worth reading, I would have liked to see a little clearer delineation of the timeline of events--even though the book makes the point that policies from long ago still have effects today, it seems like policies after the 1

I was impressed by just how detailed this book was, and just how deeply institutionalized segregation was in government policy for most of the 20th Century. Some of the topics covered in this book I'd known about in some detail, others I'd known at least a bit about, but it was still striking to see it all lined up together. Definitely important for understanding American cities and living conditions in the present day. ...more
