I gave this book a 4 star several years ago. When I put the past review in the goodreads website I had forgot many of the things that I read about the book Eldest. This time I read it again, I lowered my rate to 3 stars. Here’s why. Half of the book, in fact more than half was about Eragon practicing to be a rider. I didn’t find that fun to read. I guess we do need to know about how he is going to be a hero and kill Galbatorx, but using the entire boo Review written on June 16, 2012

I guess we do need to know about how he is going to be a hero and kill Galbatorx, but using the entire book to see him train to be a rider was a little too much.

I still think that Arya is a little dry. Her personality, well…. She does not have much of a personality. The way she acts is somewhat of a corps, just wondering around the world killing things.
I like the parts about Roran, his character is well thought up and if it wasn’t for his story I would have given this book a 2 star or maybe even a 1 star.

I like that there was another rider who taught Eragon. That part I didn’t expect never in a thousand years would I imagine that there would be another rider. Murtagh is another character I like. It sounds like Eragon was bound to lose the war facing Galbatorax when Murtagh was probably trained by the best fighters, warriors, and taught many things about magic by the king and his black dragon.
Murtagh has a strange way of thinking. He now thinks that Galbatorix is right and tries to find ways to justify his actions and the actions of the king by thinking that submission and control is a good thing and Galbatorix should have control of the people, elves, urgals, dwarfs, and humans. I see Murtagh in the future as an enemy of Eragon; If he continues to think that way, of course. Not in these books that Christopher wrote, but in future books besides Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr and Inheritance. Murtagh is a bit jealous of Eragon he probably thinks that his mother should have taken him out of that environment that he lived as a child. Eragon had a family and uncle who loved him as a son, a somewhat of a brother Roaran who watched out for him since he was a small child. He at least had a life. Unlike Murtagh, who was trained to be a warrior from the beginning and then bound and controlled by Galbatorix. I think that he is starting to think like Galbatorix. If he continues to live, he will cause lots of harm to Eragon that Eragon will regret. I see more battles coming worse than before, Murtagh a stronger fighter and because he is Eragon’s family he will be harder to kill.

An awesome sequel to Eragon. The book was a long book which held my attention for quite some time. It changed point of view between the main characters so that you always had an idea on what is going on with each of them. Has tragedy and surprise in it that is never seen coming and in the end the is a surprise that everyone knows is happening.

The second time around on this one took me from october to mid february. I hang my head in shame for not reading much of anything for so long. But hey, I finally finished it. Although it progresses into a wider realm of badassery than the first one, it just didn't do it for me like it did the first time i read it (maybe because it took me so damn long). But he spent SO much time with the elves and the romantic plot seems so forced. My goal was to reread the first three before the final one came ...more
