This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. This is a quick read! I'm a bit surprised that it won so many accolades. I mostly thought it was alright? There were some fun elements, but I was way more curious about the magic, which was mostly left as background. There's a glowing stick! There's a magical sword! There's some kind of imprisoned fire demon!

The focus on friendship was a good staple to hold the story together, though in the end there's an unnecessary sacrifice. I'm sick of those.

Such a wonderful read. I read it one sitting, on the train ride home from work. It's a gorgeous coming of age story, full of courage and cartography. The world Isabella lives in is beautifully imagined and colourfully brought to life. I was surprised that it was so short - so much happened, and the characters were so well written.
