Not a bad collection, all things considered. I went into it expecting a collection of stories from The Old Kingdom - Abhorsen based stories. Instead, only the first story, "The Creature in the Case", takes place in that world. We follow old Nicholas Sayre on a brief adventure, that left me wanting oh so much more. I didn't realize how much I missed the magic and creatures in Sabriel's world.

Garth Nix's Tales of the Old Kingdom are excellent, and the short story does justice to the rest of the series. He is a master of building tension and dread for the main character, Nicholas Sayre. His ability to describe realistic personalities is on point as ever. I heartily recommend "Nicholas Sayre and the Creature in the Case".

The other short stories were excellent as well. I tend to dislike short stories in general because if I really like the world in it, I generally want to know more than

Overall a nice collection that showcases Nix's worldbuilding abilities. A bunch of the stories are so short that it's hard to avoid a tell-over-show voice, but the potential in each makes me wish that more than just the first story had a further series to explore. I also really love the little insights into his writing process Nix gives us in each introduction. I wish more authors did this with shorts collections. ...more
