Intrigued right from the start! Good mix of fantasy and reality. I absolutely loved this author's writing, the premise of the story, the characters... everything! The bits at the beginning of each chapter that were taken out of the family book were really interesting too.

I am spreading my genre-wings a little every year! Up until the last couple of years, fantasy was a category I completely overlooked, primarily out of general disinterest. The length of many of the books / series was a deterrent

I just love Shea Ernshaw's writing! She creates magical, dark stories that pull you into an atmospheric tale. The first novel of hers that I read took place by the sea and this one takes place by a lake in a ancient and looming forest. I did guess the twist on this one, but that didn't dampen the enjoyment for me. ...more

I enjoyed this one. It wasn't the best book I'll read all year, but definitely worth reading, especially around Halloween or if you're looking for something darker. The story itself kept you flipping the pages. What I liked were the little breaks in between sections that insert part of the diary/spellbook into the story. I didn't see the twist at the end coming. I know this isn't the author's only book, so I'm going to look for some of her others. I'd give it a 3.5, so goodreads rounds up :) ...more
