What Members Thought

I felt I learned a bit about Canada that I hadn't known about. This was occasionally a dark read, and I appreciated that the author was willing to share this difficult period in her life with the public.

Content warning for sexual assault and verbal harrassment.
Beaton does a great job of capturing the feeling of an isolated place separated from society, and then reminding the reader of the different between the culture there and the culture "outside." The very last page provided direct juxtaposition.

Graphic novelists seem to excel at producing poignant, thoughtful memoirs. Beaton shows the reader (rather than tells them - there is no overarching narration) her experience of the oil sands. The book is a series of scenes/vignettes, which sometimes are connected (like the safety meetings) and are sometimes one offs. Absolutely outstanding.

I don't normally like autobiographies, but this was interesting for a view into a world I know little about. The people who work in the Alberta oil sands. People, almost entirely males, who go live in a company camp to make a quick buck doing dangerous work in an inhospitable climate.
