Not only was this as amazing as everything else Jemisin has written, but when fantasy writers really pay attention to natural science it makes me swoon. My edition has an interview with the author at the back and she talks about being at a science workshop for writers when she germinated the idea for this series. And it has trans characters and queer relationships and I am immediately buying the rest of the trilogy. That is all.

It took me a bit to get into the flow of the story, but once I hit my groove it smoothed out. There were a couple events in the story that made me cringe a bit, but they were more personal quibbles than flaws in the book. I love reading stories of societies that have forgotten their past and are rediscovering it. This one leaves me wondering if this is a future Earth or an alternate uni ...more
