What Members Thought

Not only was this as amazing as everything else Jemisin has written, but when fantasy writers really pay attention to natural science it makes me swoon. My edition has an interview with the author at the back and she talks about being at a science workshop for writers when she germinated the idea for this series. And it has trans characters and queer relationships and I am immediately buying the rest of the trilogy. That is all.

I can't quite decide how to rate this book. It was selected as a bookgroup read and although I am a sci/fi fan, I wasn't particularly excited by the premise or blurbs but decided to give it a go anyhow. It took a while, probably close to 100 pages, to really start wanting to find out what was happening/going to happen. Then I had to finish. I tend to read quickly and I confess that sometimes I skim. If I didn't have several other books in the queue, I'd be starting the second in this series (trilogy?). I loved the setting, characters and found the plot intriguing and tragic. However, I can't say much else without giving away important plot points.

Maybe closer to 3.5 stars, but rounding up for being the first interestingly unique book I've read in a while. It took me a bit to get into the flow of the story, but once I hit my groove it smoothed out. There were a couple events in the story that made me cringe a bit, but they were more personal quibbles than flaws in the book.
