Pre- and post-Pearl Harbor in San Francisco, and three Oriental-American club dancers are experiencing racial prejudice along with personal success and failures. The prejudice felt very familiar to what Muslims and Mexicans in this country might be experiencing in America now or in the near future (if we allow a certain trumpeter who likes to blow his own horn into office). Prejudice will live throughout history and the future, but books like this can educate us as to its effects on its innoce

This one was disappointing - and I love other books she's written. The writing and plot were all over the place and I didn't understand the three girls' relationship with each other. The changing narration by chapter was so confusing. I couldn't figure out who was narrating without really having to look through the dialogue. The writing felt haphazard and unbelievable. I'm giving it 2 stars only because I like the idea of the book, the setting, and the time period. Characters were blah! IMO not

This is the backdrop to the story about a trio of Asian girls who simply want to make it big in show business. It's inter ...more

I love Lisa See's writing, but I have the unfortunate tendency of enjoying the setting of her novels more than anything else. by the halfway point, i was annoyed by every single character. Still, the descriptions of wartime California kept me interested enough to push through and finish. One of these days, I'll learn not to get my hopes up by blurbs...
