On the cover is an adorable little blond girl out in the snow peaking out from behind a tree. This image stuck with me every time she was mentioned in the book. Fantasies are usually not my thing at all, but I loved this little girl and the sweet, childless couple she graced. Where did she come from and where did she go each time she disappeared? The writing was so beautiful and flawless, I could picture every scene. A lovely story apropos to this frigid January.

Beautiful story. Many of my Goodreads friends have already read it, many good reviews, it seems I am behind in this one. So what more to add... Clearly a special, emotional story. Made me cry one or two times, although at times I also thought the book was a tad slow for me. But otherwise... a wonderful book.

On BBC Radio 4 Iplayer currently: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006qtlx
I only listened to an abridged version. Is that why neither the message nor the writing impressed me? The magic is destroyed half way through the book and the message is so simple and obvious, even a bit corny. I almost feel like rating the book with two stars to make it clear what I think. I usually do not rate abridged BBC books that I have listened to, but to warn others I will. I do seem to be the exception though.... ...more

This book is a truly wonderful read simultaneously filled with harshness and magic. There is an enchanting fairytale quality to the whole book and as I read I wondered what was real and what was imaginary.

This is not the story line that I would naturally gravitate to. A middle aged couple move to homestead in Alaska around 1920 trying to flee their grief over their inability to conceive, except for one still born child. Their first snowy night there, they playfully build a miniature snowman, a snow child, and supply it with an etched face, golden hair and homemade scarf & mittens. The next morning, the snow creature is gone, but a little girl looking strikingly like the snow creation is seen runn

A solid 4.5 stars! Read this one as my neighbor (also a Wendy!) was reading it for a new book club she started here in our neighborhood. I hope all the books chosen are as good as this one! I loved the idea of the story written because the author discovered and fell in love with an old Russian folk tale. The Snow Child was a beautifully written homage to that tale. I felt as if I was floating somewhere between reality with a dash of mystical elements that always kept me guessing and questioning

And BAM just like that the first 5 star book for 2013. Wonderful imagery, heart breaking simplicity. A fairy tale full of beauty and longing, a chance to have the world slow down for a few moments.
