Inside, outside, upside down. Backwards and forwards. We meet Nicolette, ‘Nic’, living in the city, engaged to Everett, a handsome, up-and-coming lawyer, when she gets a call from her brother. Come home. Dad’s in a bad way.

“Everett is old-money Philadelphia. His whole family is that way, like old stately buildings and cobblestone and ivy."

I had my doubts that a story told in reverse  would be able  to grab and hold my attention.  I'm  happiest when stories are   told straightforward and chronologically.  But I quickly caught on and stayed fascinated through every lie revealed and every  twist of the story.  Things are  not as they seem to be in the beginning, or should I say in the end because the end is at the beginning and the beginning is at the end.   Don't  worry, though, it's  set up perfectly and flows at a nice pace.

This is a fairly typical missing person mystery made unique by being unfolded in reverse. The middle section of this book begins two weeks after the girl disappears and works backward. Unlike most mysteries where the resolution is revealed weeks or months after the event, the big reveal here comes on Day 1. It was an interesting technique, but slightly confusing. Holes in the narrative seemed to be obscured by a literary slide of hand.

Small details in relation to the story but I was hyper-focused on the details thinking they would be explained at some point, but they never came up again. If I knew someone reading this I would tell them not to get hung up on the details, not try to remember all the little stuff for further ...more

I really enjoyed this. The narrative structure made it a little confusing, and I wish I could read it again to see what I missed.
