First on the scene, the flies swarmed contentedly in the heat as the blood pooled black over tiles and carpet. Outside, washing hung still on the rotary line, bone dry and stiff from the sun. A child's scooter lay abandoned on the stepping stone path. Just one human heart beat within a kilometer radius of the farm. So nothing reacted when deep inside the house, the baby started crying...

10★! Superb!
There isn’t a thing I’d change about this debut novel from talented Aussie author Jane Harper. The Victorian rural town of Kiewarra is suffocating under the oppression of heat and prolonged drought. While some farmers and shopkeepers are still clutching at small straws of hope, others have walked off or sold out to foreign investors.

Once I started this book, I could not put it down. So glad my library had a copy because the wait list for the audiobook would have taken months.
Here is a debut that will put you back in your own hometown, in your own teenage years, hanging out with kids who are unpredictable and mysterious. How well we really know those kids who grow into adulthood is called into question when Aaron Falk goes home after 20 years away to investigate a supposed murder/suicide perpetrated by his best friend from c ...more

In a semi-rural area of Australia where the farmers are being broken by drought, a family is found murdered. Although the police from the nearest city quickly name it a murder suicide, the loan local cop recognize signs that point in another direction. In this small community, one rare murder conjures up others, particularly the suspicious drowning of a teen twenty years earlier. The story line was sufficiently engaging to keep me awake at the end of a long day, but the writing was rather cliché

I'm in a bit of a slump with writing reviews for the books I finish reading. I've also been giving a lot of 4 star reviews lately - not sure if that's a good thing or if I'm just not thinking hard enough about what I would rate them. This book, however, was on the high side of a 4 star rating. I liked the idea of the story - a mysterious death years ago and the man suspected of some involvement comes back to the small town he grew up in to help solve another crime. He's a police detective now. H

Good read! 3.5 stars for me. It drew me in from the beginning and kept me interested. I liked the back and forth storytelling from past to present, and I definitely didn't see some of the storylines playing out like they did.

I enjoyed this book and recommend it for mystery readers! I will definitely be reading Aaron Falk #2! Different, well written with mystery to the end - what I like about a whodunit! I will be attending book club in Marietta Wednesday to discuss this selection, and I am anxious to discuss the twists and turns with our group! Not quite as good as Louise Penny's Glass House, but close! I have read some really good books this month - FUN!!!!
