This is the second book I have read by Waters. Fingersmith my first encounter with her, was so amazing that I may have brought unrealistic expectations to this novel. In the years after the War, a country doctor befriends a formerly wealthy family (a mother and her two adult children) living at their decaying British estate. A wonderful revision of the Gothic novel--big creepy house, crazy women trapped in said house, a naive and confused hero, and one mean ghost. It bites! It scratches! It defaces property and wrecks havoc in the gardens! (This last one is so British). I enjoyed myself thoroughly and I'm not surprised it was short listed for the Booker Prize.

I just couldnb't get into this book...maybe it just isn't fast enough for me. I really loved Tipping the Velvet and Fingersmith but couldn't get involved. Gave it my 100 page limit and that was enough.
