This was a very difficult book to read and the story started out pretty slowly. The characters were very well-written, but the language was pretty over-the-top. I didn't start really enjoying the story until towards the end.

This was a fantastic reading experience -- exactly what I hope for when I read. George Eliot was ahead of her time on feminism and on the skill of writing too. She builds on what Dickens did for rounding out characters and applies it to women too, giving them carefully realistic agency in their lives that was a breath of fresh air.
