Danger presents itself in the Alaska wild in a multitude of ways -- blizzards; long, dark winters; wolves and bears; lack of heat, electricity, running water -- all the obvious dangers. Then we see that the biggest danger is back at home and lies within the very troubled mind of someone already having difficulty coping before moving to this land, brought on by jealousy of the neighbors and imaginings of big brother coming for you or your freedoms... or your guns. These are the struggles Ernt All ...more

We decided to read this book for our book group for May 2018. I listened to it on audio which I loved the reader. This book kept my interest from beginning to the end. It's about a couple, Ernt & Cora who was married and Ernt (the father of Leni) was in the military and had PTSD. They got some property given to them from one of his military buddies in Alaska. Another highly rated book that took awhile to get going for me. Ultimately, I bawled, but this is a book that fills the reader with trepidation. You know bad things are going to happen, and I guess the good news is that what I thought was foreshadowing wasn't.

I just really want to visit Alaska now.

This is not Kristin's usual type of book but it was so so good. I felt each character and I wondered if Leni would ever catch a break. This will tug at your heart and stay with you long after the last page is turned. ...more
