“There was a single homestead somewhere to the north of the fence, and another to the south. Next-door neighbours, three hours apart.”
This takes place 1500 km west of Brisbane in the Australian Outback. The thing about living in remote areas is that you can suffer from (or enjoy) both isolation and claustrophobia. The isolation is obvious. I say claustrophobia because what interaction you may have with family and neighbours can become uncomfortably close with no respite. Suffering brings a l ...more

A tale of a damaged rancher family living in Queensland, Australia, when in the heat of December one of three brothers is found dead out in the middle of nowhere, apparently from exposure. I was drawn in to the Australian Outback and the mystery surrounding Cameron's death by the Stockman's grave. The pages just flew by as I couldn't wait to find out what happened to this family. The setting instantly drew you in - it was like I could feel the desolation and isolation. Family secrets abound in this fast paced novel.

For this northerner, the thought of a dry, barren, hot and deadly flatland where pockets of cattle roam, poisonous snakes hide in random containers and skin cancer is a fact of life is beyond intimidating. But Ms. Harper weaves the harsh realities of the land with its dynamic peopl
