What Members Thought

A small Southern town. A church loving community that prides itself on doing the right thing, raising their children the right way. Going about their lives in a predictable fashion, until something unpredictable happens. Attending church, they are confronted by a stranger, a young person sleeping in one of the pews. They can't tell what sex the person is, his old he is, they even disagree on his color. Who is it, where did this person come from? No one knows and this person won't or can't speak.

I really wanted this book to land on something other than the affecting mysterious tone and ominous mood. Daring to make the stranger the narrator, but lacking memory, this one floats though the book drawing out the kindness of strangers who long to know more about Pew. I don’t blame them, so do I. In the end, Pew disappears after the forgiveness festival. Is pew sin itself? Or shame? Who is to know.
