It feels as though the author was searching for adequate information to fill this book. It covers so many topics, it spreads itself thin. It has breadth rather than depth. It is not only about the huge fire that destroyed the Los Angeles Central Library on April 29, 1986, but also about the man singled out as having started the fire. Any library patron or lover of books should jump at a chance to read this. It was much better than I expected of a non-fiction true crime story. I usually find such genres contain too much information told in a boring and dry manner. The author managed to give a great deal of information on a lot of topics, yet it was all presented in an extremely interesting way.

4 red stars, though I wavered between 3.5 pink and 4 red. I love trivia and this book is full of it. But it got tiring at times and I struggled to want to finish it. It was not very cohesive, but it did manage to cover the entire history of the Los Angeles public library and bring to life some of its more interesting (peculiar?) library directors.
