4.5 stars for the book, 5 stars for the narrator.
It is 14 months since Marin and Derek had their son kidnapped from an outdoor Seattle Christmas market, and Marin has about hit rock bottom over the loss. Suicide attempts. Alcohol abuse. Faltering, sexless marriage. Marin has hired a private investigator to do what the FBI has failed to do, find her son, but all paths have led nowhere again. Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this review opportunity.
Little Secrets. Everybody has them. But, some are not so little.
It just takes a second. A second of distraction leads to a parent's worst nightmare.
It's "the most wonderful time of the year" but not for Marin and Derek. Their four-year-old son Sebastian aka "Bash" has been abducted from a bustling Seattle market. The worst part : the authorities have zilch. Suspect's identity unknown, not even gender. No vehicle identificatio ...more

3.5 stars, rounded up. This was a solid suspenseful book that I really enjoyed. The book begins when the main character, "Marin", is at a market with her son when he is suddenly kidnapped. Authorities and the FBI search for her son and are unable to locate him for several months after the abduction. Before that day, Marin led a very comfortable lifestyle. She owned high-end salons and was married to her college sweetheart, Derek. After that day, however, Marin goes into a dark place and deep dep

“You know what it’s like having a child? ... It’s like your heart walking out the door on two legs, vulnerable and unprotected. It’s scary as hell.”
Marin had the perfect life. Married to her college sweetheart, she owns a chain of upscale hair salons, and Derek runs his own company. They're admired in their community and are a loving family. Up until the day Sebastian is taken.
A year later, Marin is a shadow of herself. The FBI search has gone cold. The publicity has faded. She and her husband r ...more

this was a fast paced who done it, and honestly i can say I didn't care for a single character! Each character is morally grey , corrupted, and out for number 1. Well written, plot moved along, no slow movements.

As someone who hated Jar of Hearts by the same author, this book was a pleasant surprise and I’m glad I decided to read it.
A lot of the characters felt relatable in real life situations they experienced and even the “bad guys” could be sympathized with to some degree. All of the characters are flawed, but as humans, aren’t we all?
This book really sucked me in and kept me reading and wanting to know more quickly. The best books are the ones that grip you from the start and never let go. This wa ...more
