3.5 Banville is another versatile author who writes in many different genres. In Snow, the atmosphere is front and center. It is cold, the ground covered in the white stuff which often hinders the investigation. It permeates the air, permeates everything and makes it very difficult for Inspector Strafford. It is 1954 in Ireland, County Wexford, and the Catholic Church rules with an iron fist. Just like a game of Clue, there's a body in the Ballyglass mansion library and St. John Strafford must figure out who dun it. The body is that of a Catholic priest, Father Tom, and the murderer has posed the body post-mortem and hacked off some offending parts. Not only has the crime scene been cleaned up before the Detective Inspector arrives, but also every member of the household is evasive about their whereabouts leading up to the crime. After a body is discovered in a home library, Detective Inspector St John Strafford is called in from Dublin to investigate. The death of a highly respected priest is one that gets everyone interested. St John struggles to pit the pieces together, but is finally able to answer all of the lagging questions.
Overall, an ok book. Although it did take me a bit longer to get into the book, I did find a connection to some characters and all loose ends are tied up in the end.
