Love novels set in cold places and consider the Arctic one of the last pure places on our planet. A novel and imaginative plot, blending history with a trial and the strength of women.
Jane Franklin hires Virginia, a young woman who has worked as a guide, bringing over 400 people safely to the West. It is the 1850s and women are seldom admired for their strength. Franklin wants to hire Virginia to lead a team of women to the Arctic to search for John Franklin, his men and two ships. She accepts t ...more

This story is a bit of a flip on the normal, by one great author Greer Macallister. Based on the truth it is about an expedition to the Arctic in 1853. However this expedition was women, all women, lead by a woman. Their goal was to find the lost Franklin expedition and explicitly find John Franklin for his wife, Lady Jane Franklin.
There were many hardships on this trip for the 13 women, the least of which was putting 8 women off their ship, early, onto the ice, to prevent a mutiny. D ...more

Virginia has experience leading settlers safely to California, but has never been to the harsh Northern Territory. The women set off with determination and fortitude, too soon realizing the realities of their journey. The conditions are harsh and the women are not welcomed into a world dominated by men. Thirteen women left for the expeditio ...more

After having read a few books over the last couple of months with lacklustre plots and/or weak-willed women, this was a breath of fresh air!
A little implausible at times, but an interesting insight into travelling in the Arctic in the 1850s - going beyond the limit of what had been mapped and how hard life was - for women and men - in those conditions.
The plot was very cleverly worked out, and I will certainly look forward to reading more of Greer Macallister's work! ...more

Before I started this book I was about to send it back to the library. This was talked about in a Facebook book group for a January challenge read. I got it in April, and judging the cover was about send it back, but I am so glad I gave it a try. I found this book to be engaging. It is about an Arctic Expedition which was a search party and the trial of the leader for murder. The past and the books' present were presented in a way that wasn't confusing and worked together beautifully to the tell
