A teen girl records her suicide note on a series of cassettes which are to be passed among the 13 people she blames for her suicide so that they will know how their thoughtless or disrespectful behavior snowballed into her death. The novel follows one boy as he listens to the recordings. Neither voice sounded authentic. Hannah, the voice on the tapes, was particularly problematic. She never sounded distraught, but rather angry and a bit self-righteous. The negative encounters she recounts never

This book caught my interest from the first time I saw it. I finally picked it up when I saw it at the library. Within the first couple pages I was hooked. They way the author presented this story was so real. I could feel Clay’s emotions as he listened to each of the tapes. I wanted to reach out to Hannah and tell her that everything was going to be okay. I’ve read reviews that state they felt Hannah was placing blame on those 13 people. I never felt like that through the entire story. I felt H

I am basing this review off the book only. I have not seen the Netflix series, though I do plan to watch it now that I've finished the book.
Some people claim that this book "romanticizes suicide." As someone who has worked in the mental health field, I completely disagree. The author says his message in this book is, "Basically, even though Hannah admits that the decision to take her life was entirely her own, it's also important to be aware of how we treat others."

I enjoyed this book so much; I couldn't put it down. It's written as a suspense novel but is so much more than you'd expect from that genre. It's heartbreaking, it's awful, and as someone who has been a teenaged girl and who works with teenagers, it made me ache.

Wow.
Powerful is a good word to describe it.
Every teen, parent and teacher should read this--required reading. I was also thinking thruout about how people's actions and inactions can and do impact others. It really makes you think about how you treat people.
I really liked how the story was woven together. So many parts were so upsetting, yet so real. We've all been in at least some of these situations. To me, the saddest part that almost made me cry was when Tony told Clay how he was involved--y ...more

Not sure how I feel about this YA novel about teenage suicide. I am trying to think of it from a YA's point of view, but it didn't do much for me. I was a teacher and H/S principal with lots of problem students, but the main character still didn't ring true to me???? The format was interesting, and that is actually what bound me to finishing it.

Hannah frustrated me. I find what she did with the tapes to be just as tormenting to those involved as she found their actions to be.
This books really is a show of how actions and words can be so harming even if not intended to be. I hesitate to call this a book about bullying because it truly isn't but like bullying Hannah got to the point she couldn't take it.
In the end no matter what the Reasons....suicide is very selfish. I'm so not sure having been so close to suicide myself that I would ...more

I wanted to love this book. Hannah and Clay - I enjoyed the back and forth version of the events - but sometimes got the secondary characters were confusing to and difficult to keep track of. I related more to Clay than Hannah but both of their stories got into my head.
It's a hard subject matter but one that needs to be discussed. I would recommend the book to adults and older teens with caution. There are definite triggers in the story. It addresses the sadness and weight that so many young pe ...more
