Evie, her brother Will, and his best friend Thomas all grew up very close to each other, and secretly Evie is quite in love with Thomas. He and Will go to France at the start of WWI in 1914, and the consensus is that the war will be over by Christmas. No one says which Christmas, however. Evie writes to the young men from her home near London, and Thomas writes back. I adored this tale of WWI and letters shared between childhood friends Evie and Tom that eventually deepen their relationship. Hazel Gaynor is a talented historical writer and this was a special treat to read right before Christmas.

Evie stays behind while her brother and his best friend go off to join the war efforts in France. Through letters exchanged by these three and also Evie's friend Alice, we get a rich picture of what life was like back in London as well as in France during the war. Evi ...more

I thought this book was AMAZING!!!! Once I got started it was hard to put down. I love how it is written in letter form. Evie, Thomas, Will, and Alice were such great characters to read about. Evie and Alice were two strong independent women who wanted to do more for the war effort and tried their best to do so. I love the relationship between Evie and Thomas. This relationship was built on friendship and continued to get stronger. It was interesting to read about the different event going on du ...more
