I read all of Kristin Hannah's historical fiction; none of her earlier romances however, and that's intentional as I'm rather a cold fish, after all. She researches her historicals very thoroughly and always puts together a good story to tell the history. I enjoyed this story immensely and felt a connection to it, maybe due to parallels in today's socio-political environment. Maybe because of my farming ancestors. The Dust Bowl has provided many a great novel; and this one isn't great literature ...more

"I sold my soul to the company store." This is a part of American history that is sometimes missed when we transition from early American history to modern, and is happening at the same time formerly enslaved people are also tied to land through sharecropping. I'm so glad KH wove it into this story of the Dust Bowl.

Elsa Martinelli is among a pantheon of tremendous women in literature. Her strength is remarkable and her love is enduring.

Looking back over the year this would be my favourite book of 2021. Nine months later and it still comes to mind. The characters were well created and the story was an enthralling history lesson for me. Heartbreaking tale but a fabulous read.
