4.5 Once again I start listening to a Horowitz authored book and I can't stop. I was a big reader of Sherlock Holmes back in the day and thought this one lived up to the trust placed with this author by the estate of Arthur Conan Doyle. Can't think of anyone who could have done it better. The case is twisty and Sherlock has amole opportunity to showcase his observational talents. The book flew by, aided by the wonderful narration by Derek Jacobi. Another perfect narrator for a Horowitz book.

This being my first Anthony Horowitz book I am unable to tell if I actually like him as an author. I admit he did a splendid job on this Sherlock Holmes book - one that I am sure Arthur Conan Doyle would be proud of - however I truly believe that Horowitz was following closely to a scripted and well known account of exactly what the past Sherlock Holmes novels entailed. And although this story was good, he had a basic outline to follow in the way Holmes went about solving his crimes.

I have never been a fan of Sherlock Holmes. I attempted the Hound of Baskervilles way back in my university days but I couldn't wrap my brain around the quirkiness of Holmes' personality. The historical time frame was lost on me and I generally found it to be more work than pleasure.
But this was a completely different experience. Is it Horowitz' writing style? Is it the awesome audio rendition by Derek Jacobi? Is it just my maturity and willingness to step out of my comfort zone? Or is it becaus ...more

I read a Sherlock Holmes book before reading this, to see how the books compare. I figured Anthony Horowitz could do just about anything, but dare to continue on with Sherlock Holmes where Arthur Conan Doyle left off? What I think is that Horowitz really pulled it off. The early chapters in both are similar in style. Sherlock continues to amaze everyone with his cleverness. But while Doyle eventually bored me, Horowitz astounded me. Am I impressed enough to read #2 in the series? I'm still undec

This is a traditional Sherlock Holmes mystery. I am not a devotee of the Sherlock Holmes oeuvre. I prefer to see famous characters remain in the hands of their creator rather than be adopted by other authors. Had this not been a book group pick, I would not have chosen to read it. However, I think any fan of Sherlock Holmes who would like to see him continue to live on in new stories will love this book. It had the feel of the original series.

I thoroughly enjoyed this new take on the Sherlock and Watson characters. The plot is admirably convoluted and perplexing - except of course to Holmes.
I found the writing style, vocabulary and general flavour to be very authentic to Doyle and, although I see others have not rated it so highly, I think Horowitz did a great job!

4 1/2 stars. If you’ve ever seen the Sherlock Holmes movie with Robert Downy Jr. and Jude Law and enjoyed it like I did then you’ll really like this book. The characters are written perfectly and the mystery takes on life with twists and turns and leaves you guessing.
