I devoured this! I loved the language of this novel, the vivid imageries all around. I realized that the the author is a poet from reading the afterward which made sense of the language flow. But I didn’t always like the flashbacks and how there was too much focus on including almost all of the major events from the last century in the narratives. But I loved the various female characters and how this family came to be.

But I loved the various female characters and how this family came to be.
Memphis ties three generations of women together. Hazel lost her beloved husband shortly before she gives birth to their daughter Miriam. Miriam leaves her abusive husband to raise her daughters back at home in Memphis with her sister, August. Joan forced to be around the person that harmed her finds her passion in drawing and art. There were a few detours in this journey that didn't necessarily need to be taken, but overall, this was a very original and engaging story.

The amazing women of this book kept me turning the pages. I was totally engrossed in following their story and timeline.
