Who has not wondered how their life would have turned out had they taken a different path at a significant moment? This novel imagines how Marie Curie’s life would have turned out had she remained in Poland and married the man to whom she was engaged as a young woman. In alternating chapters, both narrated in the first person, her actual life and the imagined other life are unfolded side by side. 4.5 stars rounded up. I really liked this imagining of the life of Marie Curie if she had not gone to Paris, but had, instead, married her Polish sweetheart. The chapters alternate between the historical fiction of her having gone to Paris, met Pierre Curie, etc., and her life in Poland with Kazimierz after she marries him instead. It reminded me of the moving Sliding Doors (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120148/) in which a woman's life is shown in parallel as to whether she catches a train or n ...more
