3.5 The year is 1918 and WWII along with the Spanish flu is causing much heartbreak. Ludie and Helen are sisters who, after the death of their parents, move to Colorado. Helen, the elder is a nurse who quickly finds herself treating or trying to treat those afflicted with the highly contagious flu. I love Sandra Dallas' story telling. The historical research she does and her fabulous characters, especially the females, are always top notch. This was no different and probably the first pandemic story published after Covid that I've actually looked forward to. She wrote this prior to the Covid-19 outbreak but found it generated little interest, until in the midst of that pandemic. This was the perfect time to publish it.

Sandra Dallas is one author that I go to when I need a palate cleanse. Her novels always work the trick.
With this particular book I had to keep in mind that the background of this story was set in 1918 - a much different time than now. I find that Dallas brings a lot of relevant content to her novels, however she just seems to skim the surface and does not delve deeply into any one thing. She hit on the Spanish flu, World War I, child abuse, socioeconomic divisions and women's rights, ...more

4.5 stars rounded up. I really appreciated this book. I loved the descriptions of the times and the 1918 Spanish influenza epidemic, which definitely resonated given our own recent (and ongoing) experience with Covid. I also appreciated the gradual revelation of the stories of particular characters. If you like character- and plot-driven historical fiction, you will probably like this.

3.5 stars. Thank you goodreads and St Martin's Press for sending me this ARC. Sandra Dallas is one of my favorite authors. This story takes place in Denver in 1918 during the pandemic and WWI. I enjoyed the story of the two sisters as it had all the mixes of family drama and some mystery.
