Too long ; needs better editing. For example, the time spent on the raft is just too long and drawn out.

An amazing and well-told story. Yes, it is a testament to courage, and the ability to survive, but it is also a testament to how cruel and brutal human beings can be to each other. War is a terrible thing, and that made this a hard book to listen to at times.

This was a very difficult book to read. Louis Zamperini, an Olympic track athlete, drafted into the air force during the Second World War, goes down in the Pacific, captured by the Japanese and held in subhuman conditions by sadistic guards for more than two years. Although the author avoids maximizing the shock value of the horrors of this individual’s story, the brutality remained sickening. More disturbing is the reality that we continue to brutalize and degrade our enemies. The book is well

A truly excellent story of survival and courage. Hillenbrand is a meticulous researcher, but the writer is not bogged down by minutiae. Instead, the narrative reads like an action/adventure tale interspersed with moments so violent that one wonders how any person could have survived. I brought in several passages to show my students an example of great narrative writing--they were transfixed as well. You'll stay up late finishing this one.

4.5 stars. Wonderful, inspirational story. Especially liked that it's a true story that reads like historical fiction. Not only was the writing that good, but the story is unbelievable. How could anyone survive all these horrific events?

This book was so enjoyable. Yes, it's non fiction, but it's written like a novel. You learn about the War in the Pacific through one soldier (who had a moderate amount of fame before the war) who becomes a P.O.W. It's engaging, it's shocking, but ultimately it's a tale of the human spirit as well as the depths of man's inhumanity to man. It's a tale of forgiveness... and now I sound like a promo for the film...

An instant classic. And instantly one of my all-time favorite books. Not only is the subject matter (Louie Zamperini's story) astounding, but the writing (Laura Hillenbrand's handiwork) is also excellent.
