I had high expectations of this because of Hamnet and maybe because of that I was disappointed. I thought the writing was beautiful and the author brought 16th century to life. I also liked the main character. But I often found myself bored because not a lot happens in this book. While I was ok with that in Hamnet, I wasn’t here. Not sure why. I liked this but I didn’t love it. ...more

A little draggy in places but I loved how the author set up a feeling of foreboding at the start that goes through the book. Almost like a gothic novel. I found the "surprise" ending a bit predictable and not really believable.
The author did a fabulous job of making you feel like you were there in 1550s Italy. Very evocative. ...more
