Sorry, my review ends up being about how great the audiobook was. Phenomenal, and Meryl Streep's narration was just icing on the cake for me. I'm not always enamored of Streep as I think she can over-act as easily as she can perfectly act. It felt like this book was written for her, especially with an aspiring actress as the protagonist and all that entails. It made me wonder if Patchett consulted with Streep or anyone famous in writing those parts of the story. I need to research that.

I liked the beginning and the ending and found myself wishing for a better story in the middle. The issue was that while most of the characters were likable, there wasn't much of a development character-wise. We see them in their younger years and then as older but don't see how they became who they were, at least with the main character. I enjoyed the writing but this was not one of my favorites.

Because Lara is telling a story about the past with the benefit of hindsight, we're never truly able to be in the mome ...more
