I have wanted to read this book since it first came out. At first the 5 year old's narration was really aggravating, and seemed more like a 3 year old. As the book progressed into the real world and we saw it more and more through Jack's eyes, it got much better for me. I still think, though, that for a 5 year old who has been taught to read at such an early age, who watched television, and interacted with a very intelligent and loving mother, his vocabulary and grammar should have been much mor ...more

This book starts off quietly, as the reader is immersed in the mind of a young boy and getting to know his reality (both as he sees it, and the terrible actuality of it). In the middle comes an escape and rescue scene that is action-movie intense. The last third of the book is part psychological study as we see the impact of the those first five years on the young boy, Jack, as well as their very different impact on his mother.

I have been going back and forth with 4 or 5 stars. The reason being I really liked this book and it is well written and it keeps your attention. Not sure I thought it was amazing though which is the 5 star rating. So, in the end I'm giving it a 4.5 star rating.

I listened to this on audio and the author has a different person reading each character which I love. Hands down this is a great audio book. The people selected to read each part were excellent.

I listened to this book, and although it was excellent it was one of the saddest audio books I have EVER listened to! I can't get Jack's child voice out of my head. I resisted this book for a year and after hearing it, I'm not sure I should have picked it up. ...more

Wow. This book was amazing. It was raw, and enveloped me. The imagery and emotionality of it were amazing. I highly recommend this book.
