Not quite sure how to rate this one, mixed feelings. It is an extraordinary work of interconnected stories going back and forth in time. About persons and how they evolve and develop over time. One story more appealing than the other, but an intriguing entirety at any rate. The ppt chapter, I thought… WTF, but I actually ended up liking it, a lot. It grew on me, turning the ‘slides’ and listening to the story of the daughter/sister in ppt environment. I loved the chapter about the uncle, looking

Another book broken into pieces with different voices that didn't capture my imagination. I find it increasingly frustrating not to find a good read that has a beginning, middle and end but that isn't just a murder mystery or an historical romance.

Overall I enjoyed this book. I think the author is a very talented writer who is able to change the point of view from character to character from chapter to chapter and each time I felt I was in the head of a new person. The story is written almost as if each chapter is a short story. Each is a snapshot of a point in time, about different characters and what they're experiencing. While these characters have overlap between chapters there is no set storyline. It's like looking through a photo al

Update (1/18/23):
I got a lot more out of this on a second read. The first time around I was in my mid-20s, and the impact of "time is a goon" and how aging and evolving change the meaning of the passage of time just weren't on my radar yet.
Now, this theme hit me hard. I was struck by the idea of pauses (in music, in the environment - the desert, in the jumps from one story to another) as not only time passing, but as impactful in their own right. Most directly, a pause in a rock song changes the ...more

I'm having a hard time organizing my thoughts on this book. I found it incredibly readable; I loved the way the story was told through a changing POV (many times of seemingly minor characters) and changing date. I actually read it really quickly. But, now that I'm finished, I have no idea what happened, no idea what it was about, other than the passage of time and how it changes you. I can't say there were any characters with whom I connected, or even liked.

Almost gave this only one star, something I do not think I have done before. I like different and unusual, but this was too disconnected for me. Chapter 12 consisted of graphic organizers which was clever, but they were difficult to read on my Kindle. Not much for me to recommend to anyone, and I think I read somewhere that it was a Pulitzer Prize winner or some other award???????

It's been awhile since I've been flummoxed by a book. I think A Visit From the Goon Squad earned its critical accolades--the book deals with questions of time, memory, technology, and love in intersecting and interesting ways. I think I'm going to put it aside for a bit and come back to it later, now that I know how the narrative structure works.

I really enjoyed this book. It jumps back and forth through a timespan of a few decades, and switches character perspective every chapter. Each character is connected to another in some way, generally pertaining to music. You often get more insight into one character's story through another, or get told how certain character's lives are end up in the future. These are all aspects of the novel enjoyed. I did, however have a few problems with it. I found it to be painfully "hip", and I wasn't a bi

LOVED it. I want to go back to the beginning and read it again.
