Arsenic poisoning killed 9 members of a family gathered for dinner six years before the opening of the novel. One sister was accused and exonerated of the murders. Now the three remaining family members, two young adult sisters and an elderly senile uncle live a reclusive life to avoid the taunts and suspicions of the local town’s people.
