Arsenic poisoning killed 9 members of a family gathered for dinner six years before the opening of the novel. One sister was accused and exonerated of the murders. Now the three remaining family members, two young adult sisters and an elderly senile uncle live a reclusive life to avoid the taunts and suspicions of the local town’s people. I read this book as part of a challenge--to read a book published the year you were born. I remember reading "The Lottery" in high school, written by Shirley Jackson, which is known as the greatest short story every written.
Sure, it's spooky and weird -- Jackson's hallmarks -- but the characters aren't particularly well developed, plot lines are left hanging, and the reader has to rely on a lot of guesswork to piece the story together.

I love Shirley Jackson's writing and her somewhat eerie books. The Lottery and The Haunting of Hill House were weirdly wonderful, and this was equally as so - weird, that is. LOVE different!!! I also enjoyed introduction by Jonathan Lethem about Shirley's life. ...more

Immersion challenge I gave myself: read the longer bits from short story authors. I love "the lottery" one of the best assigned readings ever. I decided to try ackson's novels. Definitely in the same vein and definitely a worthwhile read. ...more

Morbidly fascinating. The sisters and their relationship is so codependent it’s hard to read but you simply can’t look away.
