I liked this debut overall. I came off it feeling a message that family is there to help with the big life changing events, but when it comes to day to day survival, ya gotta have friends, as Bette Midler would say.

I'll probably add more details later but for now, I'll say I loved the story. The details of time and place were believable, and the narrator's voice was smart, funny at times, and definitely held my interest.
4 instead of 5 stars because the ending was ....well, blah. Much too convenient, even forced, and it was the first time I found the narrator unreliable. For various reasons, which I will not spoil here, I lost a lot of respect for the character.

This was OK In the beginning I was shocked by her life and the conditions of it but by 3/4 of the way I was desenstitized to it and found it hard to be cheering for any of the characters. I am glad it turned out well for such a hard trodden family.
I didn't expect to enjoy this, but yet did. The story is a good one and the writing is great too.
