When she Woke is the second novel I have read by Hillary Jordan and I really enjoyed this story.

Every now and again I love to read dystopian literature that is well written and interesting.

When She Woke, tells the story of a stigmatized woman struggling to navigate an America of a not-too-distant future, where the line between church and state has been eradicated and convicted felons are no longer imprisoned and rehabilitated but chromed—their skin colour is genetically altered to match the clas

I read this as I so loved Mudbound and leapt at the chance to read more of this author.
This is nothing like Mudbound as its set in the future and has some futuristic aspects such as colour-chroming of the skin for criminals, it is not a book I would normally choose or enjoy. Yet I loved this. The story follows a young girl's life after being 'chromed' bright red following an abortion. It is set in the near future in a USA that has become very extreme. The author cleverly weaves ideologies and 'd

If not for the last section of the book, I would have given this 5 stars. It is a really interesting, well written story.

I loved Mudbound by this same author so was anxious to get this one under my belt. The two books could not be more different, other than the color red on both covers. Red plays a very predominant part in When She Woke, as when Hannah, the main character, wakes from her sleep, in a jail surrounded by mirrors, she sees that her skin has been “chromed” red. In Jordan’s America of the future, people who commit murder are injected with a virus that turns them red. Hannah’s murder is that she aborted ...more

This book and A Handmaid's Tale should be required reading.
Undoubtably, this book will be reviled and banned by the religious 'right' and their educational institutions, but I think the author did a fine job of staying very neutral in her language about those groups and institutions. There is no hate-filled rhetoric, or even condemnation in this book. From the POV of the main character Hannah, there is a slow and gradual awakening to the differences of the 'real' world to the one she has been ra

I really did like about 80% of it. Then towards the end - not so much. Well written, interesting story.

I love a good dystopian tale and this one didn't disappoint. Calling into question ideas on morality, crime and punishment, reproductive rights, and religious and political extremism, this book covers a lot of thought provoking topics while telling the story of one girl. The story seems implausible on one hand and disturbingly possible on the other and that gap is what kept me thinking about the story long after I finished reading. ...more
