“He always felt a pang when looking at the hands of the newly dead, imagining all the objects and people those hands had held. The food, the faces, the doorknobs. All the gestures they’d made to signal delight or sorrow. And the final gesture, surely, to ward off the blow that would kill. The most poignant were the hands of young people who would never absently brush a lock of gray hair from their own eyes.”

I don't want to annoy others who think Louise Penny writes great stuff. OK, she does - for the simple reason she has achieved a high star rating, but she is NOT for me. The ending is SO incredible - (view spoiler) I like credible, realistic stories. This is not. The ending was simply the last straw for me.

I really enjoy mysteries like this one, set in a cozy little town where it seems talents such as artists and literary folks always end up. Not only is the inspector clever, but the townspeople as well. This one takes place in small-town Quebec, with some of the conflicts which that entails; the Anglos vs the French, the prejudice against gays, etc.

A great start to what looks to be a popular and fun cozy mystery series. I was totally enchanted with Chief Inspector Gamache right from the beginning. I like that he isn't perfect - he definitely has his flaws. But he is a great anchor for this series. I enjoyed everything about it including the idyllic setting in the small town of Three Pines (love the smattering of French throughout the novel!) and the other well-crafted characters (even cranky Ruth!). I hope that the team of Gamache and Beau

Anne Bogel (of the Modern Mrs. Darcy book blog) consistently recommends this series, and I've been looking for a quality mystery books and these might just be the ticket. Louise Penny definitely has a gift for writing and her desire to explore the human condition is what sets her prose apart. The characters are utterly relatable. Their thoughts, feelings, fears and pathologies are shockingly similar to my own. And those things are also completely different, but in a way that helps us understand

This was my first arch detective Armand Gamache book, but it won't be my last! Good mystery with lots of twists and turns right up to the very end. Set in Canada, interesting characters and lots of mysteries all of which make for a GOOD "read" for me.

I heard good things about Louise Penny and her Inspector Gamache series, so I was pleased to find this introduction to the mystery series so charming. Inspector Gamache reminds me of other engaging, witty sleuths in the Agatha Christie tradition--Monsieur Peroit comes to mind. The plot has a few pleasurable twists, and there are several characters I found likable enough to want them to make reappearances in subsequent books. If you are looking for a quiet, engaging mystery, this will fit the bil
