So beautifully devastating!

I am quickly learning that Ruta Sepetys has a lot to say, and it is important that we listen. This is the second novel I have read by her, and both about stories that people may not know about that happened during WWII. She has family history tied into these stories, and they are ones that I have never heard before.

Set near the end of World War II, Salt to the Sea follows a small group of refugees that meet during the mass evacuation to Eastern Prussia in January 1945. After years of war and Nazi occupation, people are dying from bitter cold, starvation and disease. Now the Russian bombings are taking a toll and take more lives every day as they journey towards safety. Knowing they are stronger together, their small group bands together to continue for safety and security.

3.5 stars. This book was so sad and beautiful. I loved the descriptions of friendship and love during this awful time in human history. I also really enjoyed learning more about the world's biggest maritime disaster, where 9000 (!) people were killed.

What brings the rating down for me is the fact that the first 200 pages were pretty boring. The characters are just walking and walking over ice and snow, while being secretive to each other and stopping to show their papers every now and then. But
