Everyone should read this book.

Adichie has really hit her stride in this one. After having read and adored her previous works, I knew I would love this one, and it didn't disappoint. It is by far her best work, and you can see the progression of her writing skill in Americanah.

Characters are what Adichie does best. Her books become progressively less plot-driven, but her ability to engage the reader with flawed, true characters is where she excels. Ifemelu is brazen and perhaps, to some, unlikea

About- A young woman who moves to America for a better life and in the end returns to her home country.

Why I picked it– I’d been on the library waiting list for this one forever, so I was really excited when it was finally ready. The author is Nigerian and my family is Nigerian, so I thought I would definitely be able to relate to the story. This book was a mixed bag for me.

Positives:

I enjoyed the writing style. There were some beautiful passages.

I appreciated the thought provoking topics it tackled. I found many of the authors incites well thought out and nicely presented. It was an eye opening read in that respect.

Negatives:

I couldn't fully connect with the characters. I disliked the main character and her treatment of her love interests.

The book felt exceptionally long. It meandered and went off on tangents th

I was expecting more from this book. It felt like a slow-paced sequence of scenes or vignettes, with no plot, not cohesive and not at all engaging. I’m probably being quite harsh because I had really high expectations given the hype surrounding this book.

I really enjoyed this. I just feel like this story was so long! And that is probably due to the fact that it reads half like a epic decades long coming of age/immigration/love story, and half like a critique of race in America. Don't get me wrong, I loved so many things she had to say about these subjects, it just sometimes made the story fade away and made me feel like I was reading a non-fiction essay. I think if some light editing had been done and the story condensed just a little it would'v ...more
